Ginger Pork (豚肉のしょうが焼き Butaniku no Shouga-yaki)

Pork Ginger served with lettuce.

They say in Japan, the wife holds the power because she holds the wallet.  This is true, but what truly makes her powerful is her power to make (or not make) your lunch bento! So, if you want to yield more power at home learn some bento recipes from me! (Of course, holding the wallet will help a lot too!)

Ginger Pork is one good (and very quick to prepare)dish for Bento (lunch box). It can be Donburi, if you put it on top of rice!  For this meal however, we had it at home so I can’t show you (yet) how to arrange it for bento.  Basically, bento meals must be quick to make (depending on how early you get up in the morning).

Ingredients (serves 2)

  • 150-180 g Sliced Pork
  • 100g Onion (1 small onion)
  • 1 Big Spoon of Ginger (grated or chopped )
  • 2 Big Spoon of Soysauce
  • 1.5 Big Spoon of Sake
  • 1 Small Spoon of Mirin
  • 1 Small Spoon of Sesame oil

Sliced Pork

Cooking

1. Slice onion.

2. Mix ginger, soysauce, sake and mirin to make sauce.

3. Soak pork and the sliced onion in the sauce at least for half an hour.

4. Heat sesame oil in the pan and cook pork with sauce until pork turns brown.

5. Serve hot!

I found this at exactly the right time. It’s 11.57 now, and I was just about to head over to the kitchen to cook some lunch. I was going to cook pork anyway, so that is now been changed to this delicious looking recipe. I’ll tell you in an hour or so how it worked out. Thanks for sharing!!

That worked out well. Thanks for the recipe! That was a quick meal that works just as well outside the bento box as it would in it.

What is a “big” spoon? Is that a tabel spoon? What about a small spoon?

    Hi Fred,
1 Big Spoon = 15ml, 1 Small Spoon = 5ml, so depending on the size of your table spoon I guess but generally it would be close to this amount! Hope you enjoy making it.

Wouter, thanks for trying it out! It encourages us to post more recipes!
